Fireside chat with Laura Clarke and Professor Tommy Koh, hosted by the Asia Pacific Centre for Environmental Law

Climate change and biodiversity loss are quintessentially global problems. Consequently, some of the best attempts to tackle these issues have been global in nature. Indeed, cross-jurisdictional collaboration is essential to avoid climate and biodiversity catastrophe. Law and diplomacy are therefore critical dimensions to the solutions needed to resolve these crises. How nations reach consensus on what to do, and how they then implement that consensus at a domestic level, become the lynchpin for meaningful action.
Against this background, the Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law (“APCEL”) is hosting a dialogue between Ambassador-at-Large Tommy Koh, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Laura Clarke OBE, former British diplomat and CEO of environmental law charity, ClientEarth, to speak about the role of law and diplomacy in tackling climate and biodiversity issues.
In providing their views, experiences, and take on the key challenges in decarbonisation and nature protection, this dialogue promises to be a rich and insightful one. This dialogue is a rare opportunity to hear from two highly esteemed career diplomats on the critical issues of climate change and biodiversity loss. Audience members will have the chance to hear from two experts who have had years of experience working with countries around the world and in international fora on combating environmental degradation.
Through a moderated discussion, Professor Koh and Laura will share their insights, experiences, and efforts in protecting our planet. Audience members will get a peek into the complex negotiations, partnerships, and initiatives that have led to progress on the existential issues of climate and nature protection. They will get an inside look on how law and diplomacy have played critical roles in reaching the outcomes needed to secure a sustainable future.
